Parkay Flooring Cleaning

Parkay flooring is incredibly beautiful.  Made out of solid wood, each piece is each completely unique.  They are formed by puzzling pieces of wood together (different types of woods and woods with different grains and shades) in an almost mosaic style.  These tiles or blocks can then be laid on the floor to create intricate designs that can be entire works of art.  Amazingly, it happens quite regularly that people purchase or rent a new home, lift the old carpet and find a unique and original parkay floor underneath.  This is an amazing discovery and with three easy steps of parkay flooring cleaning, you can bring the floor back to its original glory.

The three steps are:

  1. Cleaning the residue of the flooring you have just removed off the parkay
  2. Giving the parkay floor some maintenance
  3. Buffing the parkay floor

Parkay Flooring Cleaning of Old Residue

If you have been lucky enough to find an original parkay flooring underneath an old floor, there will probably be quite a lot of residue on the parkay that you will need to remove.  The most common forms of residue include:

  • Carpet residue
  • Old wax layers
  • General dirt

Remember that if you require a sharp object to remove any of these types of dirt, only use straight and clean objects.  It is advisable to use sharp plastic scrapers instead.  Once you have removed this residue, you will be left with a clean, but very dull parkay floor.

Parkay Flooring Cleaning and Maintenance

If your parkay floor hasn’t seen the light of day for many years it may be in desperate need of some TLC.  Wax products are available on the market specifically for parkay flooring cleaning, but you must know what sort of parkay you have in order to find the right type of wax.  The floor will either be wax/oil or lacquer/varnish and each requires a different type of product.

Parkay Flooring Cleaning and Buffing

Once your parkay flooring has been cleaned and waxed, it is ready to once again be restored to its shining glory.  This is achieved by buffing the floor.  It is advisable to use a professional buffing machine, as parkay flooring is very strong and tough and many amateur buffers will not even touch it.  If you want to go super vintage – to match your floor – why not use an old fashioned buffing block, which comes with cast iron weights of up to 7 kilograms?  This will truly give you the best results.

After following these parkay flooring cleaning steps, you will have restored the floor to its full natural glory.  Taking into consideration that parkay flooring is incredibly expensive – although some companies offer it from around £30 per square metre, this is generally not the best quality and you should expect to pay over £100 per square metre – finding such a floor is like finding a hidden gold mine.  All that is left now is hoping that once you have undertaken parkay flooring cleaning, it actually matches with the rest of your décor and furniture!
